I wanted to see if the beaches in NJ have any rules about putting a small tent on the beach for a day....like a sun-shade. It's not a camping tent and we would love to use it since we have a large number of small children in our family that get hot and cranky really fast. These are the dimensions...
Length: 118 in / 300 cm
Width: 68.8 in / 174.75 cm
Height: 53.1 in / 134.87 cm
Number of poles: 3
Number of doors: 1
(We'll go to whatever beach allows it!)
Thanks so much!
Frank's Reply:
Hi Rebecca;
Each Jersey Shore Beach town has very restrictive ordinances that govern what is permitted on the beach.
However, my sense is that many beaches will allow the use of a portable tent for shade purposes. I suggest you contact the beach directly to ensure you are in compliance.
I would start with the two beaches that are mostly likely to permit the use of a small portable tent:
Island Beach State Park
Seaside Park, NJ

Sandy Hook
(732) 872-5970

What beaches allow you to drink on?
Frank's Reply
Hi Ashlynn;
New Jersey public beaches have very strict ordinances against the use of alcohol on the beach.
However, if have a group and want to hire a caterer to have a party with alcohol or to celebrate an event; here are some suggestions for parties with alcohol served on a private beach::
Martell's Tiki Bar
Point Pleasant Beach, NJ
Tel: 732-892-0131
Can cater a private party on the beach with a BBQ for 50 or more
Donovan's Reef
Sea Bright, New Jersey
(732) 842-8646
or (732) 233-6353
They host company picnics, outings, birthday party's, and private party's with a complete seafood or landlubber menu and drink packages. Also you get to use their private beach and can bring your own kayaks, boogie boards or other water toys. They also have a sand volleyball court on a newly 500' long beach.

I am flying into Newark in June and want to stay for 5 days in New Jersey before I travel into Manhattan for another 5 days. My family and I (Husband and 2 daughters aged 14 & 12) do not intend driving so where should we stay that would have a short airport transfer and which would be accessible by walking when we are there. We want an elegant ocean-side vacation although we would also like the option of the theme parks, board walk experience etc.
Thanks for your advice,
Michelle,
Co Down, Ireland
Hi Michelle;
If you intend to spend time at the ocean side (we call it the Jersey Shore), you would need to rent a car. Their is little to no public transportation, that would allow you navigate the area and visit theme parks, board walks, restaurants, etc. Additionally, the airport transfer travel time to the nearest beach destination with a decent boardwalk is 1 1/2 hours, and the lodging at the most popular Jersey shore destinations tend to be low budget motels.
Having said that, the next best option for not renting a car is to visit Atlantic City and stay in one of the more elegant casino-hotels on the boardwalk. Upon arriving at Newark airport, you can hire a car transport service that will take you to Atlantic City. It's about 2 hours from Newark Airport and a one way trip will cost around $300. On the return to NYC from Atlantic City, you can hire the car service back for the 2 1/2 hour trip.
Though Atlantic City has lots of casinos and entertainment, it does not have a theme amusement park. It does have a boardwalk, a beach, plenty of restaurants at all price levels, and plenty of activities to occupy the kids.
And finally, if prefer a slower paced more relaxed alternative to Atlantic City, there is Cape May, a charming Victorian styled beach destination, at the southern tip of New Jersey. This is about 3 1/2 hours by car transport from Newark Airport. If you stay at the Congress Hall Hotel, you can walk to the beach, shops, and restaurants.
Hope this gives you the information you needed,

Where can dogs go on the Boardwalk in Ocean and Monmouth Counties.
Frank's Reply:
The ordinances for dogs on New Jersey Boardwalks are more restrictive than on the beach. In general, dogs are not permitted on the boardwalk at any time of the year.
However, the following Monmouth and Ocean County boardwalks have slightly less restrictions regarding dogs on the boardwalks:
Spring Lake permits dogs on the boardwalk during the off season after, October 1st.
Manasquan allows dogs on the boardwalk except on the approaches east of First Ave or beach east of the Boardwalk between April 1st and October 31st.
Allenhurst allows dogs on the boardwalk during the off season, after Oct 1st and before May 1st.
Note: Before venturing out with your dog, it is suggested that you confirm the current rules permitting dogs on boardwalks with the local towns as recent ordinance changes may have occurred.

The ordinances allowing dogs on beaches and boardwalks in NJ are very restrictive.
On commercial boardwalks, such as Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights, Wildwood, etc., dogs are not permitted on the boardwalk at any time of the year.
However, Spring Lake with the longest non-commercial board walk in NJ. permits dogs on the boardwalk during the off season after, October 1st.

Coolers with food and soft drinks are permitted on the beach. However, during the summer months dogs are not permitted on any of the Asbury Park beaches. Hi, I'm getting married in Belmar on May 22, 2011, and I'm looking for a fun place to have an informal rehearsal dinner nearby, anywhere from Spring Lake to Long Branch. I'm thinking like beach BBQ or bonfire, and maybe playing some volleyball. Are there any places on the beach where we can bring a BBQ grill, or maybe a pavilion? Or the other option is to eating somewhere on the boardwalk and then finding some fun activities nearby, like mini golf or amusement park-type rides and games. We'll have a small group of less than 20. Do you have any ideas where we could go?

Does Ocean City boardwalk have damage from sandy and what about the beaches?
Thanks
Frank's Reply
Compared to the beaches and boardwalks further north along the Jersey Shore and especially in Monmouth County, Ocean City, NJ feared much better.
The Ocean City Boardwalk has escaped devastating damage with some instances of minor damage reported. Most of the damage along the boardwalk had to do with the entrance/exit ramps. Because of the lower elevation down to beach level, many of the ramps were were swept away by the ocean surge. Other damage consisted of smashed windows at the end of the Ocean City Music Pier.
All Ocean City beaches from Corson's Inlet to Great Egg Harbor Inlet have suffered more extensive erosion with dune systems completely wiped out at the north and south ends.
Boardwalk repairs and beach replenishment projects are underway and by Memorial Day the Boardwalk and beaches are expected to be functional.

I was recently in Florida and they have chairs and umbrellas set up on the beach and you can rent them for the day.
I was wondering if you could do something like that in NJ. The beaches in Clearwater, FL didn't have a fee to use. Most beaches on the jersey shore require you to pay so that's why I'm thinking you couldn't just put out your chairs and umbrellas.
I know there are rental shops on the beaches but this was so convenient because they were already set up so no lugging or trying to set up the umbrella yourself.
Hi Tammy:
In addition to the beach tag fee, where available, there is a fee to rent chairs and umbrellas. Payment is in cash and there is no drivers license or deposit required.

Just a little further south on the parkway is long Branch, which offers restaurants and other activities in addition to a beach.
The further south on the Jersey Shore, the better the beaches are. To get a feel of the Jersey Shore, head 15 minutes further down on the Parkway to Belmar, or a little further down to Pt. Pleasant where you'll experience a major Jersey Shore attraction, the boardwalk and amusement park.
Regards,
Frank

I'm looking for a beach in new jersey to throw a party but i want it to be a late night party. do you know of any beaches that will allow this?
Reply:
Hi Sheena;
New Jersey Beaches have very restricted ordinances on beach parties. My suggestion is for you to contact several beaches in the area where you plan to have your birthday party and discuss what you have in mind with them and what they will allow. Here is a listing of the NJ Beaches
Have a happy birthday,

Where is there a place in Atlantic city for a private family barbecue?
Franks Reply:
Hi Beverly,
Unless you are willing to spend big bucks for a hotel or private catered BBQ picnic, finding a place for an affordable family BBQ picnic in Atlantic city leaves you with virtually no choices and you may have to consider a BBQ picnic venue 10-20 minutes outside Atlantic City.
Also, please be aware that county, municipal, and state parks prohibit the use of alcohol. Private campgrounds have more flexible policies regarding the use of alcohol and you are advised to carefully check their policies on the use of alcohol.
Here is a listing of the picnic venues closest to Atlantic City:

Estell Manor, NJ

Located on over 1700 acres with hiking trails, boating, a nature center, and historic points of interest. They have facilities for picnics. For large groups you can reserve a pavilion or use the grills and picnic tables for a family outing on a "first come, first serve" basis.
Birch Grove Park & Family Campground (County Park)

Some friends and I were thinking of spending some time at the beach, and were wondering if there was a beach or even better a boardwalk that will allow us to play musical instruments outside.
I'm talking about acoustic instruments such as guitars and hand drums. Also, will they allow battery powered devices such as portable keyboards or small battery powered guitar amplifiers?
Franks Reply:
Hi Rich;
Most New Jersey beach communities have ordinances against the playing of music on the beach or boardwalk, especially with battery powered devices such as portable keyboards or small battery powered guitar amplifiers?
For example, here is the ordinance on music playing on the boardwalk by the beachfront community of Belmar (which is typical of most beaches):
"No radio, phonograph, tape, or cassette player, television, musical instrument, loudspeaker or amplifier, or other machine or device for the electronic or stereophonic production or reproduction of sound may be permitted on the boardwalk or beachfront unless equipped and operated only with headphones."
However, you may wish to contact one of your preferred beaches for clarification of the ordinances. For a listing of beaches and contacts please visit: New Jersey Beach Information
All the best,
Frank

What are the laws/ rules for busking on either the street or the boardwalk in Ocean City or Cape May (or anywhere, if the rules are the same for every shore)? Are permits required? Or perhaps maybe one is allowed but not allowed to put out a case/bucket for tips (I know some places and cities allow buskers to perform but not to ask/request tips due to it making some people uncomfortable)? I would very much like to know how to go about the right way of doing this, if possible even at all. Thanks!!
Franks Reply:
Hi Jake:
Each Jersey Shore beach town has their own rules/laws and they differ from each other.
Here are the rules for Cape May and Ocean City:

Can I go into the ocean after Labor Day? Is that allowed?
Franks Reply:
Hi Carmela:
Swimming and going into the ocean at New Jersey beaches is allowable when lifeguards are on duty.
Most New Jersey beaches have lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day, although some (typically in southern NJ) have short extended seasons after Labor Day.
I suggest you contact the beach of your choice for life guard protection after Labor Day.

Hi,
I would like to know if we can bring cooked food inside the beach (point pleasant). What kind of food are we allowed to bring. Can we bring a folding bench?
Thanks.
Frank's reply:
Hi Gloria;
There are several private beaches and a municipal beach in Point Pleasant. The largest and most popular beach in Point Pleasant is Jenkinson's Beach, between Broad and Trenton Ave.
Food is allowed to be brought in as long common sense is observed when bringing items onto the beach such as: no glass containers, no pets, no alcohol.
Note: All coolers will be subject to inspection. Anyone caught bringing alcoholic beverages onto the beach will have their privilege revoked for the balance of the summer.
Not sure what you mean by a folding bench. I don't think there would be a problem as long as it is not intrusive and doesn't interfere with the enjoyment of others on the beach. To be sure, I suggest you contact the beach at 732-892-0600 to confirm this.
Enjoy your day at the Beach,
Frank
